Here at brushy Acers, we try our best to make sure our animals are healthy and get what they need to the best of our abilities & knowledge.
This includes making sure parasite issues are seen too, ensuring Nutrional and Mineral needs are met, and common diseases are tested for.
What we test for: We test all animals yearly over 6 months for CAE (Caprine arthritis encephalitis.) And Johne's disease quinquennially.
In the past we have tested for CL (Caseous Lymphadenitis.) with clean results back. We no longer do, due to the unreliability of the tests. instead, if anything is suspected we send individual samples off for testing. We have never had a CL positive animal or animals. We always try to be Biosecurity considerate and aware.
Deworming: We deworm on a as needed basis with help of fecal sample checks.
Coccidia Prevention: Currently We use CalfPro as a daily preventive to our goat kids. starting at 7 days of age through weaning at 4-6 months of age.
Vaccines: Here we like a preventive more than a cure. All Goats are given CD&T Vaccine.
Breeding Practices: Here we try to not rush getting does bred, all does are let to grow for a full 12 to 18 months of age before their 1st breeding. Along with making sure they are at an appropriate size & condition for their breed. Does are bred a maximum of 1x per year if not every 2 years.
All bucks are evaluated based on parentage and individual conformation to determine their place in our breeding program.
Horns: All goats born at my farm are disbudded at 3-7 days old if not born naturally hornless (Polled).
Castration: Buckling's not fit for breeding are always wetherd here. we have 2 ways of doing this; We use the banding method or the clamp castration method (Burdizzo) There is a full belief here that just because it's born with extra bits should not give the right of way to a breeding position!
Kidding practices: From the start all Breedings are planned out and coordinated. We use the 'hand breeding' method. when a doe is in heat the chosen buck is led out, they do the deed and then go back to their places, this ensures we know who is bred to whom and due dates are best known. At time of kidding, does are closely watched and are put into their own 5x12 birthing pen. all kidding's are attended and monitored. Once all kids have been born all have their cords trimmed and dipped in iodine and we ensure momma is sound. if bottle feeding kids, kids are taken at birth and given colostrum and started on the bucket. If left to be Dam raised kids are helped dry and encouraged to feed as soon as able. We do not let a doe raise more than 2 kids, so if a doe is to have a large litter extra kids are removed and bottle-fed for all's benefit.
